Modern day nomads travel the old silk route

“If you can drive to the end of the driveway, you can drive to the end of the road. If you can drive to the end of the road, you can drive to the edge of town. If you can drive to the edge of town, you can drive to central Asia.” So believes Elizabeth Fagan who this summer traveled 7,500 miles by motorcycle with her husband Stuart Homan to the end of the road and beyond.

Turkmenistan. Uzbekistan. Tajikistan. Kyrgyzstan. Kazakhstan. These post-Soviet “stans” are countries that are difficult for most of us to pronounce or pinpoint on a map. Visas are hard to obtain. Few Westerners visit them, and those who do sometimes must be accompanied by assigned government “shadows.” Maps, if available at all, are inaccurate, Homan said. “GPS certainly doesn't work, because the maps connected to it are inaccurate. Roads are terrible, there are no road signs and nobody knows where anything is. Locals can't tell you. Apart from all that, it's fine!”

But Fagan and Homan bravely explored them on their BMW F650 Dakar model motorcycle on a two-month journey that started in Rome, Italy on May 5 and ended in Almaty, Kazakhstan on June 28. Their trip took them through 10 countries, including the “stans” in Central Asia as well as western European countries on the Mediterranean, Black and Caspian seas. At many times, they were traveling along the path of the old Silk Road, which was one of the most important trade routes in the world from 200 BC to AD 1700. Marco Polo is the road's best-known traveler.
